I am fully aware that the internet is QUITE full of green smoothie recipes at the moment. But I feel like it is almost a rite of passage for any healthy food blogger these days to post their “family” recipe, if you will. And so, I would like to share ours.
But first, some history: I have been tweaking my green smoothies for the past couple years. I have always loved the idea of them, the fact that they are insanely healthy and such an easy way to get enough green, leafy vegetables in my diet. But I struggled to nail down a recipe that I absolutely loved. Then one day I ran out of kale, like I had always used, and decided to use spinach instead. And it was then that I finally reached my green smoothie happy place.
You guys, it’s not that I disliked green smoothies, I disliked KALE smoothies.
I realize that I’m totally the minority on this since it feels like everyone is drinking kale in smoothies and loving it but I’m sorry, it just tastes like grass to me.
Once I discovered that spinach is my true love, I worked to refine it a bit more. I added papaya to the mix because I appreciate its role in healthy digestion. And then some anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, cinnamon and cayenne just to kick up the smoothie’s nutritional content. They also help give the smoothie a more complex flavor.
Also, I realize that everyone has different preferences when it comes to their smoothie’s consistency so let me be clear: this is a thick, creamy green smoothie. Mostly, this comes from the fact that both the banana and papaya are frozen (I buy both of these fresh and then freeze in bags myself.) It also helps that I only add as much liquid as absolutely necessary. My goal is for it to be thick but you can obviously adjust to your taste.
I hope you enjoy!
